“According to the report of Mr.Corre, the French missionary who arrived in Dhonburi in 1767, he mentioned that dearth caused people to melt down Buddha statues for gold and silver. “

“The Chinese, and even the Siamese, not being able to sustain their subsistence by hard work, turned towards the temples. The Siamese, in accordance with their beliefs, had buried immense sums of gold and silver in the statues. They found them in the head, in the chest, under the feet, and especially in the pagodas.”

“The temples became ovens where people melted the statues for brass and copper.”

Mr.Corre said in a letter dated 1 November 1769 :
“Last year, and even this year, the Chinese and the Siamese had no other occupation except to destroy the statues and the pagodas.”

“I was already back in Siam when the Chinese have destroyed Wat Phu Thai, that great pagoda which is near to the seminary. They have found three enough gold to load three boats. In the temples of the Priest-King, Wat Padu, they have found up to five jars of silver, and also in other wats according to proportion.

The pitiful state to which the temples have been reduced could not be said to be better than the picture of our ovens. The walls are entirely pitch-black, the paved floor covered with charcoal and broken bits of Buddha statues.”

M.L. Manich Jumsai, 1977, Popular History of Thailand, p-p. 348-352

96 uprising video clip uploaded

A short video clip showing scenes of 96 uprising on 2 December 1996 was uploaded onto Stickam you see in the right panel. Found that clip on CNN but failed to find the one showing violence used by riot polices on 7 December early morning at Hledan junction. Anyway, something is better than nothing.

Just for the record.

“The possession of so many white elephants instead of bringing him good luck as forestalled by old traditional beliefs, it brought him sorrow and grief. The king of Burma saw in this an opportunity to ask for the white elephants at the refusal of which, he could simply attack Ayudhya with a clear conscience.”
M.L. Manich Jumsai: Popular history of Thailand, p. 157.

The following is an extract from page 193 of “Popular History of Thailand” by M.L. Manich Jumsai.

In all sieges of Ayudhya the Burmese had up to 1000 picked Portuguese soldiers led by their own captains to fight for the Burmese kings. Thus, Tabinshweti had Joano Cayeyro and his fearless Portuguese as his bodyguard, and later Diego de Mello and his men to command the artillery. He besieged Ayudhya using artillery manned by Portuguese.(1) Bayinnaung also used Portuguese mercenaries in his army who used firearms with great effect.(2) Great number of Portuguese had been allowed and even encouraged to settle down in Burma and marry Burmese wives so that their descendants could serve Burmese kings.

Many of you have probably watched it. But I just can’t help restraining myself from putting it on the blog. There are lots of historic pictures and video clips inside. It sure plays a part of modern Burma.

Just look at how much she is loved across the country. From young children to the aging population, everyone loves her, adore her.

May she be free….may we be free.

98 Uprising

The protest was the biggest since 96 student movements. We were again sat on the floor of historic YIT building one. We were again locked inside the school. We were again fighting for the good of the country. Although the anger was mainly directed towards lack of teaching time before the exams as well as the news of plan to splits up the campus into Hlaing Thar Yar and Sinde (Pyay) campuses, it was after all against the ruling regime. Within minutes of protest inside the campus, scores of police showed up outside the walls of YIT along with plain clothed MIs and SBs. Powerful cameras and video cameras were set up just outside the small entry gate near building one and believed to have recorded every movement inside.

The students reacted this by hanging posters with slogans and demands on the walls of YIT right in front of their cameras coolly. Moreover, the E2000 light truck which was parked in front of student affairs office was moved to block the views of cameras set up outside. A large crowd was formed and the rector was trying hard to appease the students. One after another, students stood up and let out their anger at him. Many time the rector or the secretary or others who held high position in schools assured us that the school would not move anywhere (which was a plain lie). They also assured us that we be graduated in within 6 years no matter what. We complained we had not really learnt anything (less than two months of study including 1996 school time) and they told us it was out of their hands. We wanted true education and they offered us fruitless education.

With no hope to get out of school with police around, and traffic completely diverted, we decided to continue the protest peacefully from inside the compound. The democratic songs and student union songs were written down on paper by those who knew these by heart. Many others copied the songs on their books and distributed to as many students as possible. Posters were drawn using drawing sheets and our national anthem was sung the whole day.

(I would have to honestly say that I did not remember how many days we had protests in YIT. Personally I think it was only one day because the school was officially closed the following day until the exam started.)

With darkness insight and unusual movements of troops outside, as well as by then known knowledge of the regime’s nature of making attack in dark(they did that always, in 88, in 96, in 98, and in 2003 depayin), I decided to leave. I and my friends sneaked out of the school by taking a lecturer car. We saw continuous line of military trucks from YIT to Thamine Junction with shields and sticks loaded. There were unconfirmed reports of police entering the campus around 8pm that day.

Although the school was closed, hostel students still staged protests every night in Hlaing campus and YIT campus. However, they were all under unofficial curfew and never managed to get out of their respective compounds. Hlaing and YIT campuses were off limit to people these days with barbed wire and military trucks blocking every entrance available.

When the exams started, the suspected student leaders were not allowed to take the exams at YIT. Instead, they were forced to take the exams at GTI. Some of them were taken to MI HQ set up in Hlaing Campus during exam time and plainly threatened not to take part in any of the protests. They were even told that they would be arrested even if they were seen watching others protesting.

The exams ended without any further protests and students were quickly sent back to their home towns. However, most of the students having needed to take exam at GTI did not get a chance to see their family when they went back for they were arrested at the jetty, at the stations or at the highway bus terminals. It was one after another in Rangoon. For about 2 months, I learnt one friend after another taken from their homes at night. Not only YIT students, students from other universities were arrested also. They were later sentenced to 7 years in jail for breaking which law we never know.

The wedding, the building, and the house

So you have seen the wedding. Now, let's take a look at the the building, Zayar Thiri Baikman, where they staged the reception.

An aerial view here. The orange circled building is Zayar Thiri. The one in red is popular Junction 8 and the yellow the former Yangon City Hotel you used to see at 8 mile junction. hmm...get the picture?

Feeling disgusted? Don't be. Take a look at the residence which is allegedly the compound of Than Shwe below. The two houses in front of him were believed to be the houses of Khin Nyunt and Tin Oo. The orange rectangle is a junction where you turn into North Oakkala from Kabaraye Pagoda.

Oh yes, all these buildings are inside the compound of Rangoon Division military HQ. Too large you think? Nah...just look at the buildings..not even big enough too see these from space.

So who say Burma is one of the poorest? We are in the UN's list of LDCs? Heck! it must be a mistake.

A Blogger with the name and link in this post said...
Hi Ko Generation96, Can you remove all the blogger's links, and associated mentionings within this post? As your blog is very political, we are afraid of the consequences. We have already voiced our feelings in the blogs so I think that is quite fair and enough. (It is even more than enough compared to more than 100 of silent Myanmar bloggers). We know you are doing good but we can't afford or risks the danger as most of us are blogging with real identities and real names, Not using pseudonyms. We also think this is end October so the post has already served its intention to wish Ko Min Ko Naing's birthday. Many people has already read this post. So its better not to archive it as it includes many non-political citizen bloggers.Hope you understand. Thank you.
