11th anniversary of '96 uprising

11 years ago on this day, we started the fight against the injustice by taking to the streets.
11 years ago tomorrow (3rd December), the junta started the crackdown on us by beating and arresting.
11 years ago this month, streets were filled with demonstrating students and crushing troops.
11 years ago, we lost the battle to free Burma from dictatorship.

But the fight continues. Our burning desire to achieve freedom continues. So many of us has ran away. So many of us has spent time behind bars for years. So many of us are still fighting.....

We had failed. We might have failed. But we will fight till we die.

In memory of 96 uprising and in honour of who risk their lives for the cause of better Burma.

Burmese junta ordered journals to remove Mr Pinheiro news

A cover story of 7Day News dated November 22, which is about the press conference held by Mr Pinheiro at Rangoon airport, had to be covered by silver ink and replaced with another news.

However, the censor board failed to notice the other part of story appeared in page 5 which clearly stated "Continuation from cover."

The new cover story appeared in the journal again with exactly the same wordings.

Yangon Times dated November 21 was another victim of Mr Pinheiro news. It ran the news under politics section but also ordered to remove. The journal replaced it with an advertisement of it own.

In both cases, 7Day and Yangon Times, the original news are visible quite easily with enough lighting.

Surprisingly, the news about Mr Pinheiro visit to Innsein jail, Goverment Technology Institute (a notorious detention centre during September crackdown), and Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery as well as meetings with senior Burmese ministers was appeared undeterred in Weekly Eleven journal dated November 21. The news featured a photo of Mr Pinheiro visit to the Kya Khat Wine monastery, a closed junta ally.

The difference between Asean and Commonwealth

Pakistan was suspended from the Commonwealth last night, after General Pervez Musharraf failed to meet a deadline to lift emergency rule and resign as army chief.

The decision was taken by a committee of nine foreign ministers, meeting in Kampala on the eve of the Commonwealth summit, and followed hours of tough negotiations that began yesterday morning.

Meanwhile ASEAN stubbornly refuses to suspend or kick off Burma for killing scores of people and continuing arrest and torture of democracy activists. The stark contrast between these two groupings clearly show ASEAN is indeed a group with absolutely no regard for the human rights of a member country.

Therefore, the inclusion of declaration "To strengthen democracy, enhance good governance and the rule of law, and to promote human rights. ASEAN shall establish a human rights body, with terms to be decided by foreign ministers." in the ASEAN charter could just meant not to protect and promote human rights in the region but to make the rest of the world, especially EU and US, think ASEAN is dedicated to promote human rights.

His message came down to this, said a person who listened to Mr Thein Sein’s speech: “I look after my own house. You cannot come in and rearrange the furniture. The furniture may not be great but I do it the way I want it. Period.”

To sum it up, after listening what Thein Sein had said, the Asean leaders agreed to cancel the UN envoy briefing, ultimately showing the world that Asean leaders have to genuine concern for the people of Burma. It also shows Asean doesn’t really care what the world governing body UN would have to say in the manner its envoy was treated. In fact, this incident highlighted Asean has only one thing in mind, to keep on benefitting from Burma’s abundance natural resources by nodding whatever the junta said. It is so surprising to learn that the leaders of the region follow the wishes of the junta especially after MM Lee publicly calling them “dumb generals.” Doesn’t it mean Asean leaders the followers of the dumb generals?

If one can think clearly, it is obvious the junta is not moving the furniture. They are killing the monks and civilians. They are still arresting and torturing people. They are doing that right in front of your eyes. Will you let to do them the way they want, killings and torturing? If you say yes, you are inhumane, heartless and selfish. This is not a time to have dinner with the killers of Burma and have “Family” dinner together. This is a time to show the world that you are caring and good neighbors Asean. There is still time. Fix it and the world will praise you. Let it go and you will go down in history as the selfish neighbors for Burma.

Pro-government film shot in Prome

Nov 12, 2007 (DVB) Around 200 government supporters and township police officers have been involved in a video shoot in Prome in which they re-enact the suppression of the recent monk-led protests.

Around 200 members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Swan Arr Shin and township police have taken part in the filming in the grounds of Prome airport in Bago division, according to a source who had access to those involved in the shoot.

A number of people posing as monks have also been involved in the filming. Prior to the making of the video, those involved undertook one month of riot training in preparation. The source said that those present acted out the recent protests, but made it look as though the government's crackdown came as a result of violence from the monks.

"The film looks like it's about the monk protests, but it shows the township police trying to suppress the violence initiated by monks. Then they have to call in the military when they can't overpower the monks," the source said. "So the military arrive, and first they fire rubber bullets into the crowd and some people get hit, but they made it look as though they had not choice but to fire as the monks were really getting out of hand," he said.

The scenes showed police officers following the orders of their superiors to ease the situation as much as possible without resorting to violence.

The source speculated that the film could be used to present a distorted picture of what happened during the crackdown on protests; however, the true purpose of the film could not be confirmed.

On many news web sites, newspapers and journals, a heading “Suu Kyi agrees to meet with junta” or something similar to it took place today.

I am stunned to see the way the international world media present this particular “news”. In fact, for Burmese, this statement by Daw Su issued by Mr Gambari is nothing new. The statement is now “news” for Burmese. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as well as NLD have always stressed that the genuine dialogue is the only way to solve the crisis in Burma. They have taken this stand since 1990s. Daw Su had talked with SPDC leadership many years back. NLD has always called SPDC to talk. Never did SPDC listens Daw Su and NLD calls for dialogue. Now, Mr Gambari has again call for the dialogue. Daw Su and NLD agree. It is nothing new. In fact, the only thing to show from Mr Gambari mission is that SPDC’s outright rejection of Mr Gambari call for three way talk.

In short, Mr Gambari mission to Burma was an absolute failure. This “news”, which is not news, should not lead the world to think Daw Su has just changed her mind. The world should know it is SPDC who UN has to talk or act to change their mind.

U.S. tells Singapore to cut bank ties with Myanmar

BANGKOK, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The United States told Singapore and its banks on Monday to sever financial links with Myanmar's junta, widely believed to use the city-state as its main off-shore banking centre.

"We believe that there are regime officials with accounts in Singapore," senior State Department official Kristen Silverberg told reporters in Thailand during a regional tour to drum up support for a tougher Asian stance against the former Burma. "We hope that they ensure that their financial institutions are not being used as sanctuary for Burmese officials," said Silverberg, who is responsible for U.S. liaison with groups such as the Association of South East Asian nations (ASEAN).

ASEAN is one of the few international organisations to admit Myanmar but its current chairman -- Singapore -- expressed "revulsion" at September's crackdown on monk-led democracy protests in which at least 10 people were killed.

Washington wants Singapore to go one step further and take action in the form of, say, financial sanctions or travel restrictions on members of the regime and their cronies, as the United States and Australia did last month.

Silverberg did not say whether "third party" sanctions, targeting non-U.S. businesses that do business with Myanmar, were among further measures being considered in Washington if the generals fail to embark on an acceptable path to democracy.

"Obviously, we've asked financial institutions and governments worldwide to consider whether their relationships with Burma are helping to facilitate this regime," she said.

Singapore officials have publicly opposed sanctions, but in the last few weeks, its banks appear to have been quietly distancing themselves from Myanmar, analysts and bankers say.

The most concrete example is Air Bagan, a small airline owned by Htoo Trading, a conglomerate which recently appeared on a U.S. blacklist on account of its links to the junta, which is suspending flights to Singapore.

The city state's Today newspaper said the final straw for the airline, which was struggling with declining passenger numbers after the crackdown, was Singapore banks deciding to "stop dealing with" it.

Despite Washington's assertion that Myanmar's generals park their cash in banks in Singapore -- also their favoured destination for shopping and medical treatment -- Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong insists the financial system is clean.

"We don't play dirty money. We don't condone money-laundering," he told CNN.

The Burma Campaign UK, a London-based activist group, list 10 Singapore firms on its "Dirty List" of those with links to Myanmar, including banks DBS Group Holdings , Oversea-Chinese Bangking Corp and United Overseas Bank , and conglomerate Keppel Corp. .

SINGAPORE: Singapore, the current chair of the ASEAN bloc, said on Saturday it was "deeply disappointed" over Myanmar's decision to expel the most senior UN official working in the military-ruled country.

Myanmar's announcement sends an inconsistent message about it's willingness to engage the United Nations, a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement.

"Singapore is deeply disappointed to learn of the Myanmar government's decision to discontinue the assignment of the UNDP Resident Coordinator Charles James Petrie in Myanmar," he said.

Oops… deeply disappointed? We are so sorry for that. Don’t you think it is a result of “constructive engagement”? or “keeping Myanmar in the family”?

"This announcement has come at a most inopportune time, just before the arrival of (UN special envoy) Ibrahim Gambari," the spokesman added.

Then again, that is why your Minister Mentor said they are “dumb generals”. They do what they want to do at when they want to do. They do not care whether it is at a most opportune time or not. Whee… try lecture them if you do not believe what your MM said.

The protest is the first after the military crushed the peaceful protests in late september. Reports claimed the monks came out one hour after the junta sponsored one househould one person must attend pro-junta demonstration.

Thant Myint, a disgraced grandson of U Thant

I have never heard of his name until he launched his not so successful book “The River of Lost Footsteps”. In fact, I didn’t even know Burma’s beloved U Thant has a grandson until then. I suspect he has ever had the first hand experiences of the struggles of Burma and the true relationships between Burmese and ethnic minorities, for his writings didn’t show he has enough knowledge to talk about Burma’s internal affairs albeit naming himself historian.

Frankly, no historians know better than ordinary Burmese about Burma. Burmese are tight lipped about their sufferings for they afraid their words might endanger their families. As a result, the so called historians had to rely only on different books published in and out of Burma. Some of these books are indeed the work of oppressive regime and includes junta’s propagandas. However, the so called experts or historians didn’t even know the facts inside the books are totally wrong and misleading and happily refer the books. It is a sad case for the experts and historians of Burma affairs. Thant Myint is one of them.

His recent words "We don't want Myanmar to be a parallel of Iraq, where we said it's good Saddam Hussein is no longer there, but then did not know how to handle the insurgency that went on after he was gone." not only angered the ethnic minorities and Burmese around the world but also leads to something ASEAN leaders could happily refer to when they want to defend their policy of not taking any action against the regime. These words have been used by Singapore Prime Minister and Singapore Foreign Minister time and time again to justify their stand of keeping Myanmar in the family ( the family of ASEAN governments, not the family of ASEAN nationals).

Below is what Foreign Minister said in a parliament.

Aung San Suu Kyi herself acknowledges the need to involve the military. Without the military, Myanmar can dissolve into civil war. The country has many ethnic groups, a number of which are still armed and can easily restart rebellions in the border regions. The last thing we want is a Yugoslavia or an Iraqi situation at our doorstep. In this regard, ASEAN shares a common position with China and India. Thant Myint-U, the grandson of the third Secretary General of the UN U Thant, who's no apologist for the regime, has wisely cautioned that "We don't want Myanmar to be a parallel of Iraq, where we said it's good Saddam Hussein is no longer there, but then did not know how to handle the insurgency that went on after he was gone."

It is a wonder how Singapore leaders accept and agree with some unknown writer’s view on Burma, especially when the writer might not ever spend even his childhood in Burma. However, just with this statement, Thant Myint has become a wise historian for ASEAN leaders. Sadly, he has become a disgrace in the eyes of millions of Burmese around the world. His grandfather would be so ashamed of him if he is still alive.

To be honest, this statement is a direct insult to ethnic minorities and Burmese alike. How could somebody living outside Burma say something he doesn’t understand? How well he knows about relations between Burmese and minorities? It is true that there are armed groups still holding their arms. But it is also true that they also want democracy, human rights, peace and stability. The rebel groups in Burma are not headed by trigger happy blood thirsty uneducated bastards. Almost all of the leaderships have substantial education before they decided to go against the junta. They all want to see their states progress. They all want to see prosperous Burma. Almost all the rebel groups including KNU have said they will drop the independence calls if they can get autonomy which we think is not unjust. Even if there are groups which haven’t done so, we can always talk. The citizens of Burma are not dumb. We have done it once in 1947. We can do it again in 2007. The only thing we need is our chance to do so. So, stop saying Burma would become a Balkan, or Iraq, or Somalia. We have the right to decide our own fate.

Allowing the citizens of Burma a chance to enjoy democracy and human rights would not lead to civil war but it would probably lead to lost opportunities to sell arms and buy rubies, jades, fish, timber and gas cheap.

15 Singapore has very few defence interactions with Myanmar. But we have to maintain links with the military because it is a key institution. These are largely limited to interactions at multilateral events such as ASEAN-related meetings, international defence exhibitions, and sports activities like the Army Half Marathon. As far as defence sales are concerned, it is established policy of the Government not to divulge details publicly. Myanmar is not subject to any UN arms embargo. If there is any UN sanction against Myanmar, Singapore will of course abide by it. Nevertheless, I can say that over the years defence sales to Myanmar have not been substantial, and have always been carefully limited to items that are not suitable for countering civilian unrest. There have not been any defence sales to Myanmar in recent years and, going forward, we will continue to behave in a responsible manner.

That is what Mr George Yeo replied to one of many questions. The minister didn't deny sales of defence items, instead stressed that the sales items are not suitable for countering civilian unrest. But what kind of military items are not suitable for beating and shooting people? The tanks and SAMs may be.

Ms Sylvia Lim: Mr Speaker Sir, what concerns me is to what extent Singapore might be implicated in somehow propping up the military authorities in Burma or Myanmar in their oppressive tactics. And the reason I ask this, there have been some press reports recently as well as in the past. Just to cite one example, a Melbourne newspaper called The Age last month came up with an article called "Web of Cash, Power and Cronies" which reiterated in fact, soft contents from earlier articles in Jane's Intelligence Review in 1998. And the content of those articles basically is to say that Singapore has in fact been much involved in shipping ammunitions and other military equipment to Myanmar and also been instrumental in helping to set up a cyber centre where intelligence equipment was subsequently used to monitor activists. So, I would like to ask the Minister to comment on these articles, whether there have been some activities as such, in the past, to what extent it has minimised now. Such clarity I think would be very important for us.

Minister: On the question of military sales, I've given a full answer earlier. It's been insubstantial. We've always made sure they were items which could not be used against civilians and there has been no sales in recent years. I shouldn't go on beyond that because it is our established policy not to divulge details of military sales. We have replied to the Australian newspaper. As for the reports about helping them establish a listening facility to monitor civilian dissidents, there's no truth in that. We have made repeated clarifications to Australian newspapers. They have printed our replies, but somehow the journalists who wrote subsequently ignored those replies we've made. As for their accusations about us being involved in drug money laundering, it goes back quite a long time to Dr Chee Soon Juan. We've clarified again and again but they keep being recycled and that article you've referred to contains some of that recycled hash.

The answer is the same as answered before. But, let's see what he has said before. In answer 16,

16 Ms Eunice Olsen asked whether the Government would consider granting humanitarian assistance to the Myanmar people. We would certainly do so if there is a request from Myanmar. Singapore has provided significant technical assistance to Myanmar for human resource development over the years. To date, we have trained more than 6,000 Myanmar officials in several areas, including English language, tourism, IT, civil aviation and telecommunications. We do not intend to stop such assistance. Under the Initiative for ASEAN Integration, we have established a training centre in Yangon. Should one day the Myanmar Government open up and request further assistance from us, we will certainly do all we can.

That was an admission that Singapore has helped trained Myanmar officials. The training included IT and telecommunications, which can be used against monitoring activists in and out of the country. It is also mentioned a training centre was set up in Yangon. Isn't this be the cyber centre an australian newspaper mentioned? I believe it is the one. 6000 officials in for training and a training centre is more than good enough to monitor large webs of activists around the world. Moreover, never in the history of Burma, the military had intention to help general public, let alone training 6000 officials for them.

George Yeo's used the word 'trouble makers'

Dr Lily Neo: Mr Speaker Sir, MM had said that an unstable Myanmar is a "time bomb" for Southeast Asia. Could Minister elaborate on it? Are ASEAN countries in agreement with this view? Should such scenarios be discussed in ASEAN countries so that all can be better prepared to mitigate such eventualities?

Minister: It is true that Myanmar is a ticking time bomb. For the time being, because of the way the government has been able to arrest ‘trouble-makers’ and intimidate the population, there is an apparent return to normalcy.

The word 'trouble-makers' is an insult to the peaceful demonstrators including monks and nuns. Although the Foreign Minister probably referred to the word used by Burmese Junta, it was not a wise choice, for we, Burmese, felt greatly insulted by it. It leads us to think Singapore has no genuine desire to help the oppressed general population but the cruel military only. By saying so, the trip to the Buddhist Monastery was wasted.

Arresting Black Listed persons at Rangoon (Yangon) Int’l Airport

At the counter which is neither Immigration nor Custom at the new Rangoon (Yangon) Int’l Airport terminal, the name of the passenger to be departed from Rangoon (Yangon) was keyed in to the computer. A list appeared on the screen with similar name(s). The passport number was keyed in to determine the passenger. The personal details including the photo of the passenger were appeared. After a few seconds, a message claiming the passenger was checked successfully and not included in the “Black List” popped up. The passenger was then cleared to proceed to the immigration.

If a passenger was not cleared at that point, he or she was subject to arrest by the junta. It is not known how many of them were detained by now.

There were unconfirmed but quite reliable reports of arresting people who actively organized the overseas demonstrations as well as revoking the passports of those who were mere participants of the protests overseas.

What will Mr Gambari sell?

Mr Gambari has arrived, traveled, talked, extended his visa and flown back. UN has listened and finally issued a statement. Burma has responded by dismissing the statement outright. The generals showed they do not give a damn about Mr Gambari and UN by keep on arresting, torturing and killing monks and civilians, including nuns and women nationwide. If Mr Gambari, ASEAN, US, EU and the whole UN have relatively sound mind, they should all know by now the Burmese generals are spitting their faces like hell. Yet, all of them still think asking a person like Mr Gambari to go talk to inhumane generals would help Burma. Or are all of them issuing statements just to save their faces?

If the leaders of the world do not know how to access the apparent failure trip by Mr Gambari, let me tell you how the citizens of Burma access it.

Anti-junta picture inThe New Light of Myanmar

This is the picture published in The New Light of Myanmar on 10^th October as anti-Iraq demonstration in London. However, the posters and banners in the pictures clearly show that this is indeed the anti-Burmese Junta demonstration.

The poster highlighted in red bear the words; “Support the monks. Free Burma”

A map of Burma is right in the middle of the board highlighted in blue.

The word circled in green on the banner is believed to be the word BURMA.

Although many claimed this as a Big lie exposed, I personally think this might not be the case. There is no way the editor could miss to check the picture and words especially when they have original picture in hand in full color as well as the source where it comes from. Moreover this oversight is far more impossible especially after killerthanshwe message appeared on Myanmar Times. It is very likely this is indeed a very brave silent protest. I salute everyone involved in it.

Even the news just beside the picture might not be a coincidence. Although the news apparently slams Britain PM Brown for putting party politics above the national interest, it makes people think how much the generals put their own interests above the national interest. This is again very likely because the person who sent it out to the world chose to include that news portion rather than cropping it out.

If I am to think more, I feel even the message in Burmese above the picture is not there by chance. Normally, it is a usual SPDC slogan. But the message reads “Double the effort to produce” in English. Right above the pictures of anti-junta protests? Isn’t it possible they are asking the people to double the efforts to (produce)strike again?

These could be the facts or these could be my imaginations. However, this time, no one would come out and say it is us who did that.

Ko Kyaw Thu and gentleman face mask wearing dogs

Ko Kyaw Thu and I were friends since childhood. It was me who taught Ko Kyaw Thu how to play guitar at the time he became an actor. He was a lovable man.

Recently, I heard different rumours about Ko Kyaw Thu and his wife whereabouts. One said they went to the border, another said they were in US embassy, yet another said they were arrested and so on.

Just today, I heard the real news from the inside source. It is true both of them were arrested. How do you think they get arrested?

The one who told me didn’t know the exact date, so I would leave the date open. Just before bedtime on the last day they donated meals to the monks, Ko Thura heard the news about imminent arrest. Then, Ko Thura sent Ko Kyaw Thu and his wife to a safe place along with U Aung Way. Ko Thura was arrested on his way back home to pack things. His unselfishness to help his friends caused him being arrested. Right after Ko Thura was arrested; they straightaway went to U Aung Way and arrested him also. During that period, Ko Kyaw Thu and his wife were on the run, the whole night.

That is why when the couple was not at home anymore when the authorities showed up at their house to make an arrest. What do you think the respectable authorities did then? Without giving any reasons, they hauled up eighty years old U Sein Tin, father of Ko Kyaw Thu. Just think how respectful the gentleman face mask wearing dogs are.

They then left a message to the family members left behind;

“Tell that crap Kyaw Thu to come and submit himself if he ever wants to see his dad alive again, if not, don’t blame us!”

As a result, Ko Kyaw Thu had to exchange his life with his father’s. His wife, Ma Shwe Zee Gwek, said she would follow her husband and let them arrested.

Just before that day, I had a lengthy conversation with Ma Shwe Zee Gwek while waiting for Ko Kyaw Thu to come back from demonstration camp. I got a chance to chat with Ko Kyaw Thu just before we left Ko Thura house in the morning. They are so courageous.

I remember the last words Ko Kyaw Thu said;

“Well done, well done. Please carry on. I will also carry on.”

U Maung, I have given my words.

I will not let you down U Maung and Ko Thura. I will not back off.

The killers will get killed

Recently, reports from Burma-Thailand border said KNPP, a Karenni rebel group, has seized a Burma Army outpost near Kalaw. This is the first sign the killers of the monks will get killed soon. History will be repeated.

It is well documented that during 1988 demonstrations, thousands of people were gunned down by the military. What the world didn’t know was what happened to the soldiers who opened fired on the peaceful protesters.

It was no coincidence Burma Army strongholds Mine Yang and Maethawaw fell into the hands of BCP (Burmese Community Party) and KNU (Karen National Union) respectively just after the killings. The army launched major offensives against BCP and KNU soon after at one go. Troops deployed in the cities were ordered out and sent straight to the front lines. As a result, Burma Army not only recaptured Mine Yang and Maethawaw, they started overrunning many more BCP camps and KNU camps one after another in a shockingly short time.

Later, words were reached to the towns that during both operations, soldiers were given two options. Either keep on charging against the rebel gun fires or be shot. Although the authenticity of the options was to be questioned, one true fact remains. That is, ALL of the soldiers who killed the demonstrators were killed during these operations. Today, it is believed not a single killer (soldier) live to tell his personal experiences of '88 killings.

Now, KNPP has captured one army camp. It is so doubtful how an outpost which is so close to state capital Kalaw could fall to relatively weak rebel group like KNPP. There are words of ABSDF and SSA preparing offensives against the army, news which will be so welcomed by the generals. After all, if history is to be repeated, it is time the killers get killed.

Five Generals and soldiers jailed for refusing to shoot monks

Burma's ruling junta have detained five generals and more than 400 soldiers for disobeying orders to shoot and beat monks and other activists who took part in recent protests in Rangoon, an official said Monday.

The official, who asked for anonymity out of fear he would be punished by the junta, said it was the first sign of divisions in the country's secretive establishment.

"The five generals expressed their refusal to deploy their troops against the monks openly. They were then quickly put into detention by the junta.

"Some 400 soldiers of the Sagaing Division near Mandalay also put down their guns in front of the monks, and asked for their forgiveness as they fully realized they had committed the biggest sin," he told The Jakarta Post.

The official refused to disclose the names of the generals or give further details on where the generals and the soldiers were detained.

Following Burma's recent wave of anti-government demonstrations, which drew more than 100,000 protesters at its peak last week and saw the military shooting at civilians and monks, the Burmese administration announced that 10 people, including a Japanese photographer, had been killed during the protests.

Foreign diplomats and Burmese dissidents said the true death toll was much higher.

The official said that most civil servants like himself did not like what the junta had done to the monks but were too afraid too show their feelings.

"Monks are a symbol of our religion and our life. People are very angry that the military dared to shoot them. It is considered the biggest sin to kill monks," the official said.

He said that many civil servants and other workers were beginning to quietly express their dissatisfaction by staying at home and not working.

Shwe Myo Thant, secretary-general of the Chiang Mae-based Nationalities Youth Program, an organization of 12 ethnic groups working to empower Burmese people, agreed that many workers were boycotting the junta by staying home.

"They want to show the military that they disagree with the violent crackdown. By not working, we hope that they can put more pressure on the junta to open dialog. Beside the civil servants and the workers, the monks are also continuing their protest inside their monasteries by staying silent and refusing to pray for the government," he told the Post on Sunday at his office in Chiang Mae.

Analysts have speculated that the disobedience of some military generals could be the beginning of cracks inside the military establishment, leading to civilians taking power in a manner similar to the events in Indonesia during the May 1998 riots, which led to the fall of Soeharto.

Two detainees die in custody

Oct 8, 2007 (DVB)–Two unknown youths arrested during last month’s protests have died in detention after being beaten by soldiers, according to a former detainee. The former detainee, who was recently released from Rangoon City Hall where the two young men were also held, told DVB that they died on 29 September after being badly beaten up by soldiers from Battalion 66. "Their valuables, such as watches and necklaces, were removed from their bodies by soldiers after the youths died. Bodies were seen being taken away in trucks at around 11pm that night." Family, family, family. It is all about keeping Myanmar in the family. That in turn means keeping the brutal military junta in the family. So, Is ASEAN just a family of governments? What about the citizens of each country?

In fact ASEAN should be a group of families. Each nation is a separate family. These families are living in a town called ASEAN.

Now the town people are witnessing the brutal beatings and killings in a family called Myanmar. What do you do when you see or even hear when your neighbours fight? Do you watch and publish a statement? No, either you interfere or you call the police. You just cannot stand and watch when one was being bullied by another albeit they are just the same family members.

Now, we are asking you to either interfere or call the police, which in this case is UN. Again, the police cannot just knock the door and wait until the fight is over. They never did anyway. They have to break the door and go in with guns ready if needed. So, here it is, it is now time for the neighbours to tell the police to break in and ACT simply because they have seen and heard how bad the situation inside is. They just cannot tell the police to issue warnings outside the door. That won’t work.

The Evidence

These are not the pictures you want to see time and again. But these are the pictures you should never ever forget. These are the hard evidence how brutal the military regime is. These are the images of a dead body of a monk floating in the Nga Moe Yeik river. The injuries sustained by this monk can still be seen on his head and the back. In fact it is clear almost the whole body was badly beaten before the body was thrown into the river.

And this particular sighting proved the rumours about the army throwing dead monks into the Yangon river after the killings was indeed true. In fact, this is not the first time the dead bodies were thrown into the river. The burmese army thrown more than 300 dead bodies into Irrawaddy river after the massacre in Sagaing on 9-8-88. The relatives of the deaths had to go as far as 10 to 20 miles down stream to collect the bodies up to a week.

The world could not afford to wait longer. The oppressive military regime has to be overthrown for the sake of 50 million burmans who have been suffering under military rule for almost half a century.

An eye from the sky

The American Association for the Advancement of Science and US campaign for Burma said they are watching Burma from the sky using low-orbit satellites owned by commercial firms that pass over Myanmar every day or so.

They might not see the shootings but they might be able to see the mass troops movements and mass rally. It is a slim hope for us at least.

The Number Game

Burmese military junta yesterday claimed 9 people died during the crackdown. That reminds me of the press conference by then army chief General Saw Maung 19 years ago. During the press conference when asked about the number of people killed during 1988 uprising, which the army crushed brutally and killed thousands of people, he answered "fifteen". The journalist surprised at his answer asked back "fifteen or fifty?" for confirmation. The junta chief answered "one five. one five" smugly. How could it be when more than a thousand lost lives right in front of City Hall on 8888 alone. That shows the army has no qualm about lying blindly to the international media.

Now the ruling junta, SPDC, announced 9 people dead. I am shocked to see the number because if 15 means thousands, then 9 means hundreds if not thousands.

And our inside sources confirmed more than a hundred on 27th September alone, the highest casualties after 1988 uprising.

And the junta has cut off internet lines and killed many more again today. Rangoon residents told they used iron rods to beat and kill people so that people would not hear sounds of gun fire. The worst hit today was at Pan Soe Tan. They military and SAS people killed the injured protesters by beating with the iron rods the witnesses said. There also are eye witnesses about dead bodies of monks being thrown into Rangoon river by the army. This scenario has happened in Sagaing on 9,8,88 as well. On that day, more than 300 Sagaing residents were shot and killed by the army. The dead bodies were all thrown into Irrawaddy river then. Even after more than a week, Sagaing residents still found their loved ones bodies many miles down the river. This time the bodies of monks killed can only be seen by the fishes and seamen.

The tragedy would continue if the world cannot kick out this worth for nothing junta.

Protesters reportedly beaten to death by soldiers, goons and convicts in Pansadan and China town

Several protesters were reportedly beaten to death during a crackdown in Pansodan and China town in the heart of Rangoon at about 3:00 p.m. (local time), protesters said. The baton charges and brutal beatings carried out by soldiers led by officials, including members of the Swan Arrshin, USDA and former convicts, who were believed to have been freed to be used in the crack down.

A protester told Mizzima

"I was in Sule but went home at about 2 p.m. (local time). I left because the situation was getting ugly. There were a lot of members of USDA and former prisoners. Yesterday the soldiers dropped about four truck loads of former prisoners to crackdown on the protesters. When I looked at them, I saw their legs and bodies were swollen. And they carried bags in which they had catapults and 'ginkalih'. Soldiers were checking the people from behind."

"Just now someone called me from the 40th Street and told me that there was a pool of blood on Pansodan flyover and people in China town had to flee because of the shooting. First the protesters marched from Sule to Pansodan and from Pansodan to Bar Street. And when they arrived on Pansodan Street, soldiers did not fire but started beating up the people. Members of Swan Arrshin also started assaulting them with iron rods. They were beating people to death. It all happened at about 3 p.m (local time)."

"People started fleeing to the 17th Street and to China town. But the soldiers blocked the road on Lanmadaw Street. So far we don't know how many deaths have occurred but I am sure there are more than a hundred deaths. Thousands have been arrested. Since Insein prison cannot accommodate anymore people they are being detained at the Government Technical College (GTC)."

"We are worried about the fate of the monks arrested and dragged into trucks like animals on September 26, and also for those monks locked inside the pagoda. A lot of monks are locked up inside the monasteries. The government has announced that nine people have died but that is not true, I am sure there are at least a hundred deaths."

WHO officials said they have rush to the Rangoon general hospital to donate medicines after hearing that several people have been injured after troops shot protesters. However, the hospital authorities rejected the donation and sent them back.

An eyewitness account of a local who reached near the Sule pagoda

"Students numbering about 30,000 holding the flag of a fighting peacock started marching from Nyaungpinlay market on the Lanmadaw street but did not come to Sule pagoda side and headed for the other side. And inside the Sule Park people with batons and machetes are preparing to attack. All together there are about 3000 to 4000 people waiting to attack near the Sule area. People are also gathering near the Sule pagoda and are defying the junta in their own way."

"In most of the street corners near the Sule, people are waiting with batons and machetes to attack any members of Swan Arrshin if they would appear."

Security in Rangoon has been entrusted to the regiment 66 and 77. Both the regiment divided areas of control with regiment 77 taking care of north and south Okklapah townships, while regiment 66 takes care of downtown Rangoon.

"People are now shouting slogans on Pansodan Street. And from the corner the street, the soldiers are watching. The people are shouting and running. Now there are more than 10,000 people here. But soldiers' strength remains the same. What we fear is they will come form behind and block us," a protester told Mizzima.

About 17 military trucks, was positioned at Maelahmu pagoda in North Okklapah, were seen moving out of the township through the Kabba Aye Pagoda Street.

An eyewitness said:

"I heard that there were military trucks in our locality, so I went out to look and saw 17 military trucks positioned at Maelahmu pagoda. But from there all the trucks moved back at about 1 p.m. (local time) towards Rangoon. They went through the Kabba Aye pagoda road. In one truck there were about 30 to 40 soldiers. No soldiers were left behind. I heard rumours that there is diverse opinion in the military. But it cannot be confirmed. Because they just came here and there are no shootings and it is difficult ot find out what is going on between them."

"The soldiers were stationed at Maelahmu pagoda at about 9:30 or 10 this morning. But now there are no more soldiers. All of them went back. And everything is normal now, and there are no protests here"

"At the Mealahmu pagoda there is a monastery. We thought that the soldiers must have come to the monastery. But they did nothing to the monastery, and they all headed to Rangoon through Kabba Aye Pagoda road."

It is as if they are blocking the road not to allow any civilians to enter. There are about four military trucks, and I think they are putting people inside the trucks. The troops in Rangoon are not backing off but their numbers are increasing. And they are choosing places where the people are to be transfered," an analyst told Mizzima.

"A lot of people are saying that we must fight against the junta because we will not get the same opportunity later. We must end this show now. They were talking among themselves. And they were unhappy. A lot of people in the locality also talked the same way. They said even today they will continue," a source in Rangoon told Mizzima.

More than 30 security personnel in camouflage fatigues were seen inside the compound of Tharmwe basic high school No. 3 and N.4.

Though all government schools are open, most of the students did not attend.

Soldiers and security forces are seen continuously patrolling the city and barbed wire barricades have been put outside the police station in Kyauktada Township in the heart of the city. In the police station more soldiers and policemen are being sent as reinforcements. Many security personnel are deployed in the Sule area.

Mr Kenji Nagai, a japanese journalist, on the run just a second before getting shot. The soldier right behind him with gun aiming at his back.

Mr Kenji Nagai still alive and probably begging not to shoot again. (right hand holding his camera). The soldier has started running towards the crowd but still aiming the gun towards the journalist. A riot police coming out near with shield holding near the tree.

His injured body lying on the street. A gun shot wound can be seen on his body near the right hand. It is not known whether this wound is the result of the shot piercing from the back or another shot fired at close range. A riot police shield dropped near his body beside the pavement.
The movement of his body showed he was still alive until then. Flares was fired although there were no more protesters anywhere near the area so as to prevent people from taking the pictures. A riot police shield near his head.

Be damned with India for saying it is internal affair. How about Burma stop buying your aging helicopters and stop discussing selling natural gas at way too low price? Participants of yesterday's protest near Shwedagon now claimed the burnings of motorcycles were not done by the public. One protesters said "They burned the motorcycles themselves and put the blame on us. We didn't do it."

Much of the confrontations was caught by one citizen and now available on DVB. The world could see how the soldiers stripped off the monks' robes, kicked and beat. Police were seen firing tear gas into near by monastery and throwing rocks into the compound for many minutes.

Frecnh embassy staff said although shots were fired in the air initially, the following shots were aimed at the protesters. Out of 3 monks dead, two were beaten to dead and one shot to death.

However, the monks said the casualty was in fact 5 monks.

Early this morning, the Army raided several monasteries in Rangoon and arrested 500 monks from Yankin Moe Kaung monastery and 150 monks from South Oakkala Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery. Several shots were fired as early as 4:50am when the Army raided the monasteries, the witnesses said. People near the monasteries heard the shouting of monks "Wake Up, Wake Up" to let the general public know the arrests have been taken place.

Four killed in Myanmar Protest Crackdown

YANGON (AFP) - - Myanmar security forces used batons, tear gas and live rounds Wednesday in a violent crackdown on mass protests against the military junta, killing at least four people including three Buddhist monks.

Two of the monks were beaten to death while another was shot when he tried to wrestle a gun away from a soldier and the weapon discharged, two senior Myanmar officials told AFP.

They said the monks were killed near Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's holiest site and a key rallying point for the clergy leading the nine days of protests which have spread across the Southeast Asian nation.

A fourth man, who was not a monk, was shot dead, a hospital source said.

At least 100 people were injured during the day and some 200 people were arrested, as many as half of them Buddhist monks, according to witnesses and diplomats.

State television news said that one 30-year-old protester had been killed, and another two men and one woman were injured, along with 10 police.

The report said security forces had used loudspeakers to ask the crowd to disperse but that the protesters had hurled stones and sticks at them, tried to steal their weapons, and set fire to two military motorcycles.

"Because of the difficult situation, the security forces opened fire to disperse the crowd, using just a little force against the violent protesters. Because they opened fire, the protesters dispersed," it said.

According to inside sources, security forces started beating the monks brutally who were peacefully trying to reach Shwedagon Pagoda from East Gate. Monks and people were brutally beaten and kicked and thrown onto the trucks right in front of the onlookers. One source even reported soldiers stripped off the robes of two monks and set on fire as well as stomping the Buddhism flag held by the monks. This rough treatment set ablaze the public anger and changed the whole scenario. The protesters retaliate by throwing rocks and set on fire the motorcycles used by the Military Intelligence Agents.

It must take a very special kind of courage for people to give up all they hold dear—family, livelihood, convivial evenings with friends—for a democratic cause that they know in advance offers no short road to freedom but only a return to prison.


‘The courage of Jimmy, his wife and their friends is exemplary,’ says The Irrawaddy’s Jim Andrews, seen here at a Rangoon meeting with the 88 Generation Students group activist.

Kyaw Min Yu and his wife Nilar Thein have a comfortable home, where they regularly entertain friends. Many, like them, are members of the 88 Generation Students group, and the talk usually centers on political issues and the struggle for democracy and a better life for all in Burma.

The young couple have a common experience of the grim reality of present-day Burma—Kyaw Min Yu spent 15 years in prison for his involvement in the 1988 popular uprising, Nilar Thein was locked up for 10 years after participating in demonstrations in 1996.

The young couple have something else of importance in common—a four-month old daughter Phyu Nay Kyi Min Yu, and both regard their pro-democracy work as an investment in her future. “We want her to grow up in a just, democratic society, free from fear and conflict,” Nilar Thein has said.

Kyaw Min Yu often slipped out for a beer with friends and political comrades at a Rangoon bar where members of the 88 Generation Students group meet at shadowy corner tables and discuss their peaceful campaign to bring democracy to Burma. The bar, one of Rangoon’s most popular haunts, is an unlikely venue for their political debate. A live band shares the nightly program with screenings of international football matches.

Kyaw Min Yu is known there as Jimmy, and that’s how he was introduced to me. It was something of a private joke. “Hi, Jim,” I would say. “Hi, Jimmy,” he’d reply.

In the night of August 21, the joking ended. Jimmy was arrested, along with at least a dozen other opposition activists who had demonstrated that day against the sharp increases in the price of fuel announced with no warning by a capricious regime out of touch with its own people. In a typical display of gratuitous callousness, the regime has kept their whereabouts unknown, although it’s reported that they are being held in several separate locations, including the notorious Insein prison.

So it appears that the detained activists don’t even have the company of their comrades to keep their spirits up. That comradeship kept Jimmy going during the 15 years he spent in prison.

He hadn’t been long out of prison when I first met him at his favorite bar. He’d invited some other former student activists along, and they reminisced about their prison experiences like a group of former schoolmates at an annual reunion.

Memories were exchanged of successful attempts to circumvent prison regulations and trick the jailers. one artist in the group had smuggled out his works painted on tee shirts with paint mixed from crushed bricks and grime. Other former prisoners recounted how they had developed a communications code, tapped out on the pipes that ran through their cells.

Tales of prison brutality also laced the conversation at our rebel table, but not a hint of bitterness surfaced as the activists talked of a democratic future where even the rights of the members of the current ruling elite were to be protected. “Reconciliation” was the key word.

“We’ve seen enough of brute force, violence, hatred and senseless retribution,” said one former prisoner. “We are working for a future of peaceful cooperation among all sectors of our society.”

Jimmy’s own immediate future is now determined by the confines of prison walls. His wife is in hiding, hunted by the agents of a vengeful regime. Their little daughter is in the care of his mother-in-law.

Others of that happy, unaccountably optimistic group with whom I had spent such pleasant evenings in a Rangoon bar are also now in prison or in hiding. They had all staged peaceful demonstrations knowing full well what awaited them and fully conscious of the sacrifices they were making. “Somebody has to speak out,” Jimmy said in one of the bar-table debates.

The courage of Jimmy, his wife and their friends in the face of official obduracy and oppression is exemplary—particularly for a regime that needs to engage such brave and farsighted people in the unavoidable task of constructing a free, democratic Burma.

“၂၀၀၀ မဟုတ္ပါဘူးကြာ၊ ၂၀ ေလာက္ပါ။ သတင္းေတြခ်ဲ႕ကားေရးၾကတာ” ဆိုတဲ့ အေျပာမ်ဳိးေတြ အာဏာရွင္တို႔က သိပ္ႀကိဳက္ပါ့။ က်ေနာ့္ အျမင္ေတာ့ ဒီလို ေျပာၾကတဲ့ လူေတြဟာ အာဏာရွင္တို႔ရဲ႕ ဘက္ေတာ္သားေတြျဖစ္ဖို႔ အမ်ားဆံုးပဲ။ ဒီလို မ်ားမ်ားေျပာေလ က်ေနာ္တို႔ အတိုက္အခံ သတင္းေတြကို ယံုၾကည္မႈ နည္းေလ ျဖစ္ေအာင္ေပါ့။ မသိမသာေလးနဲ႔ သိသိသာသာ စိတ္၀မ္းကဲြေစတဲ့ ေထာင္ေခ်ာက္ပါ။

ဒီသတင္းကို ေရးေနၾကရတဲ့ လူေတြဟာ ဗမာျပည္ကလူေတြ ေျပာသမွ်ေပၚမူတည္ၿပီး ေရးရတာပါ။ ဘယ္လိုနည္းနဲ႔မွ အတိအက် မမွန္ႏိုင္ပါဘူး။ ဒါကို နားလည္ လက္ခံရမယ္။ အဓိက က ဘာေတြျဖစ္ေနသလဲ ဆိုတဲ့ ကိစၥပါ။ ဒါေတြ ဒီေနရာမွာ ျဖစ္တယ္ဆိုတာ သိရရင္ သူတို႔ တာ၀န္ေက်ၿပီ။

August 8 has yet again arrived. We would pray for the fallen heroes. Burma itself would hope the military rule be ended soon. The world would watch Burma on this very day.

But the world should know lives were not lost only on this day. Even though 8888 was the most notable day during the 1988 uprising, there were many other days when guns were fired.

If you are reading this, please bear in mind that thousands of innocent lives were killed on this day 19 years ago as well as countless other days throughout the country.

Be understood that the army shot people neither to protect themselves nor to protect the government properties. They shot simply to kill as many as they can. They regarded innocent unarmed civilians as shooting toys. Anyone who witnessed these shootings as well as anyone who happened to watch some of the rare video shoot of 88 uprising would agree my statement. After all, I’ve witnessed these shootings for months. I’ve run for my lives from the bullets for many times. Many prisoners feel guilty about the trouble they have caused their families by taking up politics. .................., the whole family comes under increased surveillance and sometimes harassment. Some political prisoners feel so guilty that they encourage their wives and girlfriends to break up with them so that their lives will not also be destroyed. One political prisoner who felt this way wrote a song about it and sang it for me when I interviewed him several years later.

“စစ္တပ္ဆိုတာ စစ္တိုက္ရင္တိုက္၊ မတိုက္ရင္ စစ္ျပင္ဆင္ေနတာပဲ။ အခုဆို သူတို႔က ဘယ္ေနရာမွာ ဆႏၵျပပဲြ ျဖစ္ျဖစ္ အဆင္သင့္ပဲ။ ဒီဘက္က သူတို႔လို ready မျဖစ္ဘူး။”

“စစ္တပ္မွာ ကိုယ္ကိုယ္တိုင္ရယ္၊ ရန္သူရယ္ပဲရိွတယ္။ သူတို႔ဘက္က မဟုတ္ရင္ ရန္သူပဲ။”

“ေတြ႕ဆံု ေဆြးေႏြးေရးလို႔ က်ေနာ္တို႔ကသာ ေအာ္ေအာ္ေနတယ္။ ဒီေကာင္ေတြက က်ေနာ္တို႔ကို ဘယ္လို ေဆာ္ရမလဲပဲ ေခ်ာင္းေနတာ။ ေဆြးေႏြးဖို႔ လံုးလံုးကို စိတ္မ၀င္စားဘူး”

က်ေနာ္ ျမင္တာ

အကုန္လံုးကို က်ေနာ္ လက္ခံတယ္။ ၆၂ ကေန ဒီေန႔အထိ စစ္တပ္ဟာ လူထုအေပၚ အၾကမ္းဖက္ ႏိွမ္နင္းလာတာႀကီးပဲ။ ဘယ္ဆႏၵျပပဲြမွာမွ ၀ိုင္းထားတဲ့ ရဲ၊ စစ္တပ္ က ျပည္သူလူထုကို ေအးေအးခ်မ္းခ်မ္း အိမ္ျပန္ခြင့္ မေပးခဲ့ဖူးဘူး။ ဘယ္ ရဲ၊ စစ္တပ္ကမွ ပစ္မိန္႔ကို ဖီဆန္ၿပီး မပစ္ပဲ မေနခဲ့ဖူးဘူး (ဓႏုျဖဴမွာ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ကို မပစ္ခဲ့တာကလဲြလုိ႔)။ ဘယ္ေလာက္ပဲ လူၾကားေကာင္းေအာင္ ေျပာေျပာ၊ ေဆြးေႏြးပဲြဆိုတာေတြဟာ မင္း ငါတို႔ ေျပာတဲ့အတိုင္း လုပ္ပါ လို႔ ေခၚေျပာတာထက္ မပိုခဲ့ဘူး။

က်ေနာ္ ထပ္ေျပာခ်င္တာ

က်ေနာ္တို႔ အတိုက္အခံေတြဟာ ယံုၾကည္လြယ္တယ္။ စစ္တပ္ကို မေကာင္းေျပာရင္ လူမျမင္ရလည္း ပစ္ယံုလုိက္တာပဲ။ စစ္တပ္မွာ “မီဒီယာကို မီဒီယာနဲ႔ တန္ျပန္ထိုးစစ္ဆင္ရမယ္” ဆိုတဲ့အမိန္႔နဲ႔ မူရိွၿပီးသားဆုိတာ က်ေနာ္တို႔ အားလံုးသတိထားသင့္တယ္။ ေလာေလာလတ္လတ္ လက္ဖက္ရည္ဆိုင္က နမူနာေပါ့။ က်ေနာ္ ေျခာက္တာမဟုတ္ပါ။ ဒါေပမယ့္ လက္ဖက္ရည္ဆိုင္မွာ သိပ္ကို စကားကၽြံခဲ့ၾကတဲ့ က်ေနာ္တို႔ ဘက္ေတာ္သားေတြ သတိေလးေတာ့ နည္းနည္းပိုထားသင့္တယ္။ ဖံုး နံပါတ္ေတြ၊ email ေတြပါ ေပးမိရင္ ပိုသတိထားေပါ့။ ဘာလုိ႔ ဒီလက္ဖက္ရည္ဆိုင္ဟာ ဒီေလာက္လြတ္လပ္ရလဲ၊ ဘာလို႔ သူတို႔ကို ျမန္မာ့ဆက္သြယ္ေရးက မပိတ္လည္း ဆိုတာေတြ က်ေနာ္တို႔ စဥ္းစားမိခဲ့ဖို႔ ေကာင္းတယ္။ အခုဆို သူတို႔တေတြ ဘယ္ႏိုင္ငံမွာ ဘယ္ေလာက္မ်ားမ်ားေသာ တက္ႂကြသူေတြရိွတယ္ဆိုတာ မွန္းလို႔ရသြားၿပီ။ ဒီလူေတြကိုလည္း နာမည္၀ွက္ေပါင္းစံုနဲ႔ ဆဲခဲ့ၿပီးၿပီ။ ဗမာျပည္မွာလည္း ဘယ္သူေတြ ဘယ္ေလာက္မ်ားမ်ား လုပ္ရဲလဲ သိၿပီ။ ဘာေတြလုပ္ခ်င္လဲ ဆိုတာလည္း သိၿပီ။ တကယ္ေတာ့ လက္ဖက္ရည္ဆိုင္ ၀ိုင္းေတာ္သားေတြဟာ “မီဒီယာကို မီဒီယာနဲ႔ တန္ျပန္ထိုးစစ္ဆင္ရမယ္” ဆိုတဲ့မူရဲ႕ ပထမဆံုး သားေကာင္ေတြျဖစ္သြားၾကတာပဲ။

Collective well-being

As a leader of the ABSDF, Dr Naing Aung, put it, ‘Our parents didn’t do it, so we have to take this responsibility. If we didn’t do it, the next generation will face the same problem.’ This has been Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s argument. People must join together and participate now, so that everybody can live in peace and security in the future. But remembering the farmer-carpenter who is worried about getting the next meal on the table for his family, it is easy to understand why people hesitate.

The fact that parents of all backgrounds usually foster conformity with the regime reflects an interesting twist on the ‘Asian Values’ argument which prioritizes collective well-being over individual rights. Because Burmese parents, like parents everywhere, try to protect themselves and their children form harm, there is no collective well-being but only continued fear and insevurity for everybody.

It's about Time

Such bitter feelings can be seen in the poem of a young man who journeyed to the Thai border to join the All Burma Student’s Democratic Front (ABSDF). He wrote a poem about his brother, a captain in the Tatmadaw, published in the ABSDF’s Dawn Oh Wai (Cry of the Peacock) magazine.

It’s About Time They See It. It’s About Time They Correct It

Big brother,
Don’t look down on me with a sneer.
Do you dare to fight back the eyes and the smiles of the people?
Expose your knees which have knelt under the BSPP and look.
They are covered with scars.
Aren’t you ashamed?
Look at my knees which didn’t kneel under the BSPP.
There are no scars.

Big Brother,
Are you going to remain silent, raising your forefinger and nodding,
For the good of a group of evil spirits who are crazy for power?
Don’t you know that the stars on your shoulders and your salary come from
The people’s blood and sweat?
Which one are you going to look at?
The stars on your shoulders or the faces of the people?

Feeding Money

Ne Myo and his wife are admirable parents, doing all they can to take care of their children. Moreover, the grandparents don’t have to suffer unduly because they now have enough money to pay off the military men who come to the house to extort fees for porters and forced labour. But by feeding money into the system that has put them in this untenable position, they are inadvertently helping to prop it up. I say this not to criticize families trying their best to survive but to demonstrate how a military regime becomes self-sustaining even when most of its citizens are opposed to it.

People and Govenment

The relatives of Ma Pyu, a university student who campaigned for the NLD in the 1990 election, expressed similar sentiments. They told Ma Pyu’s parents: ‘Ma Pyu doesn’t know anything. Why are you letting her do this political work, fighting the government? Our government is very big and your daughter is so small and has no knowledge. It’s useless.’

The attitude of Ma Pyu’s relatives is exactly what successive military regimes have tried to cultivate. The relatives took it for granted that the people in power knew everything and ordinary people did not have the capacity to change the situation, so they should stay quiet. Not only did her relatives see themselves as powerless, but they sought to disempower Ma Pyu as well.

ဒီလို မစြန္႔လႊတ္ႏိုင္တဲ့ မိဘေတြ မ်ားေနသေရြ႕ေတာ့ က်ေနာ္တို႔ လိုခ်င္တဲ့ ဒီမိုကေရစီရမွာ မဟုတ္ဘူး။ က်ေနာ္ထပ္ေျပာဦးမယ္။ ၉၆ မွာ ဆႏၵျပပဲြေတြျဖစ္ေတာ့ လာလိုက္ၾကတဲ့မိဘေတြ။ ေထာင္နဲ႔ခ်ီတဲ႔ ေက်ာင္းသားအုပ္ၾကား၀င္ရွာ၊ ငိုယိုၿပီး အတင္းဆဲြထုတ္။ ဒီလိုနဲ႔ တတိတိနဲ႔ ေလ်ာ့ပါးသြားရတဲ့ အင္အားဟာ သိပ္မ်ားပါတယ္။ ဒါဟာ စစ္တပ္က ျဖစ္ေစခ်င္တဲ့အတိုင္း တိတိက်က်ပါပဲ။ လူထုအင္အားကို လူထုနဲ႔ပဲ ျပန္ၿဖိဳလိုက္တာေပါ့။ သူတို႔အတြက္ သက္သာတယ္ေလ။ လူအမ်ားႀကီးကို ဖမ္းဆီး၊ ရိုက္ႏွက္ရတာဟာ လူနည္းနည္းကို ဖမ္းရတာေလာက္ ဘယ္လြယ္မလဲ။

The Power of the Powerless

She then brought up Vaclav Havel’s essay, “The Power of the Powerless”. Written about Czechoslovakia under Soviet rule, Havel’s words had relevance for the struggle in Burma as well. She said, ‘We need to understand that people who are not in power have their own power. Don’t think you don’t have any power just because you are not part of the power structure.’ She talked about how the regime made great efforts to demonstrate they had the support of the people, for instance by staging pro-government rallies which people were forced to attend. The regime, she said, was using the power of the people to prop up their own power structure. If people didn’t have power, the regime would not bother with them. She declared, “That is why we rely on the people. Because you have power. For that reason, we are openly requesting people-power from the people.’
