The relatives of Ma Pyu, a university student who campaigned for the NLD in the 1990 election, expressed similar sentiments. They told Ma Pyu’s parents: ‘Ma Pyu doesn’t know anything. Why are you letting her do this political work, fighting the government? Our government is very big and your daughter is so small and has no knowledge. It’s useless.’
The attitude of Ma Pyu’s relatives is exactly what successive military regimes have tried to cultivate. The relatives took it for granted that the people in power knew everything and ordinary people did not have the capacity to change the situation, so they should stay quiet. Not only did her relatives see themselves as powerless, but they sought to disempower Ma Pyu as well.

စဥ္းစားၾကဖို႔ပါ။ ဒီလိုပဲ က်ေနာ္တို႔ ဆက္ေနသြားၾကမလား။ ကိုယ္မလုပ္ႏိုင္တာ၊ မလုပ္ရဲတာကို ကိုယ့္သားသမီးေတြ လုပ္ရင္ အားေပးမလား၊ တားဆီးမလား။ ေတာ္လွန္ေရးတိုင္းမွာေတာ့ အနည္းနဲ႔အမ်ား စြန္႔လႊတ္မႈေတြ လုပ္ၾကရမွာပဲ။ က်ေနာ့္အျမင္ေတာ့ (ကို)မင္းကိုႏိုင္တို႔ ၈၈ ေက်ာင္းသားေခါင္းေဆာင္ေတြရဲ႕ မိဘေတြဟာ ရဲရင့္တဲ့ စြန္႔လႊတ္မႈကို လုပ္ခဲ့ၾကတယ္။ သူတို႔ခ်စ္တဲ့ သူတို႔ျမတ္ႏိုးတဲ့သားသမီးေတြကို ဗမာျပည္ႀကီး ေကာင္းစားဖို႔အတြက္ အႏၲရာယ္ႀကီးမွန္းသိသိနဲ႔ လူထုဘက္က ရပ္တည္ခြင့္ ေပးခဲ့တယ္။
ဒီလို မစြန္႔လႊတ္ႏိုင္တဲ့ မိဘေတြ မ်ားေနသေရြ႕ေတာ့ က်ေနာ္တို႔ လိုခ်င္တဲ့ ဒီမိုကေရစီရမွာ မဟုတ္ဘူး။ က်ေနာ္ထပ္ေျပာဦးမယ္။ ၉၆ မွာ ဆႏၵျပပဲြေတြျဖစ္ေတာ့ လာလိုက္ၾကတဲ့မိဘေတြ။ ေထာင္နဲ႔ခ်ီတဲ႔ ေက်ာင္းသားအုပ္ၾကား၀င္ရွာ၊ ငိုယိုၿပီး အတင္းဆဲြထုတ္။ ဒီလိုနဲ႔ တတိတိနဲ႔ ေလ်ာ့ပါးသြားရတဲ့ အင္အားဟာ သိပ္မ်ားပါတယ္။ ဒါဟာ စစ္တပ္က ျဖစ္ေစခ်င္တဲ့အတိုင္း တိတိက်က်ပါပဲ။ လူထုအင္အားကို လူထုနဲ႔ပဲ ျပန္ၿဖိဳလိုက္တာေပါ့။ သူတို႔အတြက္ သက္သာတယ္ေလ။ လူအမ်ားႀကီးကို ဖမ္းဆီး၊ ရိုက္ႏွက္ရတာဟာ လူနည္းနည္းကို ဖမ္းရတာေလာက္ ဘယ္လြယ္မလဲ။
