We were born in Burma
We were born as Burmans
We speak Burmese
We eat Burmese food &
We were taught to love Burma
Yet we left Burma
In the midst of political turmoil
Yet we left Burma
With the hope of returning democratic Burma
Yet we left Burma
With brave hearts
Months passed
Years passed
Burma hasn’t changed
Government hasn’t changed
But who cares?
We are not in Burma
But who cares?
We are not suffering
But who cares?
Our families will be rich with the money we send
Do we need to fight for freedom?
Do we need to fight for democracy?
Absolutely not!
We are safe and we are fine after all.
Generation96
(Dedicated to all Burmans staying abroad who fall into the category of “who cares”)
Written in 2005 after witnessing the disappointing turn out at Daw Su’s Birthday held at Toapayoh monastery. Even though more than 300 T-shirts were snatched FREE, barely less than 50 people wore the shirts on that day.
